properety

Aside from the inhabited portion of the property, there are 220 acres of natural resource grounds. 110 acres are continuously farmed agricultural land. There is a raw 70-acre wooded tract, a cemetery dating back to the origin of the site, and Providence Creek, which divides the property at the county line. Wetlands border the creek and abound, along with a 5-acre pond, and habitat for a vast array of plant and animal

wildlife. A 3.5 mile cross country track course is home to Smyrna High School Cross Country teams and is the site for a variety of events. Hiking, biking, picnicking, and the like are also available. The campus area consists of a park-like setting of mature trees, walkways, and landscaping. There are ball fields, a volleyball court, and playground. Pedestrians may enter through the massive stone archway at the front of the property, which was constructed in 1896, in part, by the first residents of the industrial school.

As part of construction for a 55+ residential development, the community will gain a brand new 12.5-acre park. Senior housing had been one of the original projected elements of the site, for its synergy of having folks who may need and may help provide social and recreational service.

But in a unique configuration of the plot, the developer agreed to develop the required twenty-five percent open space and donate it back to St. Joseph's. This passive park land, with walking trails, seating areas, and landscaped grounds will be available for use by members of the local community.
